Boys U-12 Capture Regional Championship (July 3, 2007) — The Rochester Junior Rhinos boys under-12 soccer team won the Region 1 U 12 (8 vs 8) Championship with a 2-1 victory over Virginia Beach's Football Club Red. The U-12 boys, one of three Jr. Rhinos teams representing New York State West after wining the NYS West Championship, were in Portland Maine to compete against the state champions from the 16 eastern state soccer associations. During the 5 game tournament, the U-12 boys outscored the opposition 16-1 to win the title on July 3rd at Bowdoin College The Junior Rhinos, who hadn’t been scored on the NYS West State Championship, the Region 1 Preliminary round or the semi-finals fell behind 1-0 in the last minute of the first half of the championship game. Jordan Allen evened the scored on a penalty kick, and Alex Brown added the winner four minutes later. The defense, Jesse Toth, Justin Mercer and Ben Swanger, with goalie Tyler Brew held off an aggressive Virginia offense that had averaged 6 goals a game in previous tournament play. |
