GU-11 Green Girls Win Winter 2008 TSE Girls U12 Division

The RJR Girls Green U11 team recently won the Total Sports Experience's GU12 indoor league (non-boarded) in dramatic fashion. The girls finished the regular season in first place with a 7-0-1 record.

The Green girls played up an age group against strong club teams. Two of the toughest regular season victories were against second place Chili and third place Brighton Stormers, both by the same 2-1 score.

In the finals, RJR were playing without the strong play of Xaelel Allen-Caballero and knew that the competition would be strong.

In the first round of the playoffs the Jr. Rhinos faced the Greece Buccaneers. The game was a physical one in which RJR prevailed 3-1 on goals from Mary LoCicero, Elena Sullivan and Breanna Ratliff.  Many members of the team were banged up after their hard fought victory and had only one hour to recuperate before the finals. In the other playoff game, the Brighton Stormers defeated Chili 6-4.

The finals pitted the Brighton Stormers' division leading offense, against the Jr. Rhinos with the stingiest defense in the division. The Rhino's defense was anchored by sweeper Maryn Kent and flanked by the great play of Holly Heffer, Addison Teng and Hannah Wadsworth. The dependable goal tending duties were split between Sarah Little and Alaina Corso. In the first 9 games the defense allowed only 15 goals.

IWinter 2008 Total Sports Experience Girls U12 Championsn the Championship game the Stormers used their size and strong kicks to muscle their way to a 4-1 halftime lead. This was RJR's weakest half of the indoor season.  At halftime there was no panic as the girls refocused and were determined to get back on track. The team's true character - a gutsy, never-say-die group of athletes- was put on display in the second half. The defense settled down and did not allow a goal in the second half. Adding to Elena Sullivan's first half goal, the balanced offense had red hot Mary Locicero net two goals, Sidney Santillo tied the game and the game winner, in the final minutes, was scored by Breanna Ratliff. The stunning, come from behind, 5-4 Rhinos championship victory was a truly a team effort which was led by the inspired, tenacious play of midfielder Amanda Mietus, who fittingly assisted on the game winner.

The GU11 Green team will compete this summer in the RDYSL's GU11 first division.
